So I've gotten up close and personal with a lot of luxury vehicles in my years but none have failed to impress me so much as the Rolls Royce Ghost Series II. It's always been striking in photos but in person it was kind of a let down.

Forget what it costs for a moment, think about it as just another vehicle, the way it looks, the way it performs. If viewed as just another big ass car, it doesn't seem all that cool. Personally I think the S8 or S63 AMG are far more interesting vehicles at a fraction of the cost. In fact I'd go so far as to say the Ghost II is downright boring because it's a cry for attention and there's nothing interesting about desperation.

But who cares what I think, what do you think? Am I just another jaded asshole who spends too much time around fancy cars to realize that a Rolls is freaking awesome? Or am I right to say that the Ghost II is the most overrated luxury car currently on the market?

I'd love to know what you think so leave your picks in the comments below and don't forget to tell us why you chose the vehicle you did. Trash talk isn't as much fun if you can't back it up with a bit of reasoning.

Andrew Maness writes about cars because he has one and also has a computer. He's been known to drunkenly Tweet as !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and upload photos to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . He also has a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and thinks talking about himself in the 3rd person is really weird but knows it's necessary if he wants to be taken seriously as an Oppo contributor.

I personally think everything RR makes these days is sinfully ugly. I also prefer beer and chips over wine and cheese, so I'm not sure if I'm entitled to an opinion on something that costs more than my house.

What I think is that you are used to the "new luxury" HIDS, 67812387168 way power seats, massage, auto driver, etc etc. The rolls is "old luxury" insanely quite, smooth as tit, doesnt make a fuss. trys to fly under the radar.

Let me put it this way. the S-class is for boys. the roller is for men.

bently kinda bridges the game, but I would still label it "old luxury" if I had to choose one or the other.

Personally most of the low end cheaper models of all the luxury brands are overrated in my eyes. My expectation when I get into a luxury car is nice real leather, a well appointed dash and gadgets and gizmos all over the place. Whenever I look and see how you can get yourself into a BMW or Merc for relatively cheap, especially CPO, I cringe when I see interior pictures and see that a BMW radio looks as plastic and cheap as the ones in every single Dodge. The base seats look no better than the ones in a cheap Japanese car and the fact that they offer fake leather is amazing. There is a reason I want to hold out for a newer A6/S6 over the A4 just because the overall look and feel of the interior feels like you are in a luxury car.

"the Ghost II is...a cry for attention and there's nothing interesting about desperation"

There we go. That's why I strongly dislike Rolls and Maybachs and the like (perhaps even S-Class Mercs). It's not like a Jag XJ or an A8 that are at least understated. There's an extra level of attention-seeking to driving one of those flash-mobiles.

They're for oil sheiks and new-money posers who want to make sure people know that they're oil sheiks or new-money posers.

I'd much prefer to drive some classy-as-fuck car from the 30s like an Alfa 6C or an SS Jaguar :)

Seeing them in person does less for me than an old Viper. They are too dull, too British.

Right there with you. Nothing I've seen from RR that isn't at least 60 years old is all that interesting to me. Bentleys are just ostentatious and annoying, though that may be largely the fault of the drivers...

I thought that was the point of them.

I guess it is, but I think dull is overrated.

Maybach

The car version of a bad attempt at copying and 1-upping the iPhone in every single feature.

"RR has a clock. We have many!"

"RR has no tach? We have 2! One for the driver, and 1 for the overweight rapper in the back seat!"

I'd go with older Rolls-Royces, ca. 1980s-1990s. The build quality wasn't that great - they rusted badly and were riddled with electrical issues - were prone to breakdowns, and the technology was years behind the rest of the industry. They basically traded on the name and the reputation of their predecessors, but if you really wanted the best luxury sedan back then, you bought an S-Class.

There are so many cars I would get before I would ever think about a Rolls, Bentley, Maybach (I know they don't make them anymore). S63/S65 Coupe for starters.

I'm very much looking forward to the next gen XJ. Given how far Jag has come since the car debuted, I think we're in for something beautiful and classy.
